Chocobo breeding in Final Fantasy VII opens the door to some of the game’s most valuable secrets, allowing specially bred Chocobos to cross terrain that ordinary mounts cannot. By capturing the right Chocobos, improving their racing performance, and pairing them with specific nuts, players can eventually produce Green, Blue, Black, and Gold varieties with increasingly useful abilities. This guide covers each Chocobo type, where to find it, the stats and breeding conditions involved, which nuts to use, and what each breed can ultimately help you reach.
To begin chocobo breeding, rent stables at the Chocobo Farm and make sure you have
Chocobo Lure Materia equipped before hunting around chocobo tracks. When a chocobo appears in battle, do not attack it. Defeat the enemies around it while keeping the chocobo distracted with greens.

For basic capturing,
Gysahl Greens are enough for casual catches, but better greens make the process safer.
Krakka Greens can help reduce the chance of a chocobo running, while
Curiel Greens or
Reagan Greens are better choices when you are trying to secure an important Good, Great, or Wonderful Chocobo. Keep several greens on hand so the chocobo does not flee before the battle ends.
Your first serious breeding goal is to catch a Good or Great Yellow Chocobo. Good Chocobos are found near the Gold Saucer, while Great Chocobos are found near Rocket Town and Mideel. You need one male and one female, so save before sending captured chocobos into the stable if you want to reset for the correct gender or rating.

Once you have the right parents, feed them greens to improve their racing stats.
Sylkis Greens are the best option for breeding preparation because they greatly improve speed, stamina, and racing performance. They are expensive, but they are the most useful green once you are trying to win races and produce better offspring.
After feeding the parent chocobos, race them at the Gold Saucer. Aim for at least a few wins before breeding, since race wins improve your odds. Breed the Good or Great Yellow Chocobos with a
Carob Nut to produce either a Blue Chocobo or a Green Chocobo.
Repeat the process until you have both a Blue Chocobo and a Green Chocobo of opposite genders. Blue Chocobos can cross rivers and shallow water, while Green Chocobos can cross mountains. Feed both of them
Sylkis Greens, race them for additional wins, then breed them together with another
Carob Nut to produce a Black Chocobo.

Next, catch a Wonderful Yellow Chocobo near Icicle Inn. This chocobo should be the opposite gender of your Black Chocobo. As before, save before moving it into the stable if you want to control the result. Feed and race both the Black Chocobo and the Wonderful Yellow Chocobo before breeding.

Finally, breed the Black Chocobo with the Wonderful Yellow Chocobo using a
Zeio Nut. This produces the Gold Chocobo, the best chocobo in the game. It can cross nearly every type of terrain, including oceans, allowing you to reach Round Island and collect
Knights of Round Materia.

For the smoothest route, keep a stock of greens, save before every important stable move or breeding attempt, and do not be afraid to reset if you get the wrong gender or color. The main items to prepare are
Chocobo Lure Materia, several capture greens,
Sylkis Greens for racing, three
Carob Nuts, and one
Zeio Nut.
