Final Fantasy Online began in 1997 as a small, AOL-hosted website dedicated to Final Fantasy VII. What started as a simple fan project quickly grew alongside the popularity of the series, expanding its guides, information, media, and coverage to include Final Fantasy IV through Final Fantasy X.

By 2001, FFO had become one of the largest Final Fantasy websites on the internet, serving a worldwide community during the early years of Final Fantasy fandom online and arguably what had been the best decade of the franchise.

As the web changed, so did the site. Its original content-driven presence gradually faded during the mid-2000s, while the community continued in various forms, including a period as Final Fantasy Society and later once again under the Final Fantasy Online name.

Today, FFO is back with the same basic purpose it had from the beginning: to create a comprehensive, fan-made resource for the games, characters, worlds, and history of the Final Fantasy series while preserving a small piece of early Final Fantasy fan site nostalgia.
